IN THE GROW: Landscape gardener Andy Smith, who has re branded his business
BRANDING could be the key to helping small firms expand, a landscape gardener believes.
Andy smith, has been running Green Onion Landscaping for four years.
Mr Smith, 40, from Stockton, said it gave the business an identity that would help it stand out from the crowd.
He said: " Regardless of whether you are a big or small company, if you have an identity and get a good reputation, you can build on it. It is okay being known under your own name and getting work, but if people start to see your logo, it can build momentum.
" The name Green Onion is also very different from your usual landscaping names. Green Onion stands out in your mind, which is really important in marketing.
"We've already seen a rise in phone calls since the van's been on the road, so it's obviously working."
The change comes at the same time Mr Smith has seen an increase in work, partly driven by people deciding to improve their homes, rather than move, while property prices remain low.
He said: "My business was successful and had been growing steadily for the past four years. I get a lot of recommendations for work from past clients and through word of mouth and my leaflets. I've worked in the landscaping business for 18 years.
" I had started supplying new services in response to customer trends and demand last year, and to meet the weather conditions. However, with the onset of the snow, business did begin to slow down.
" I realised that times could get harder still. I had heard of a few local landscaping businesses closing down. I decided that my company wasn't going to join them. I want Green Onion Landscaping to continue to succeed and stand out from the crowd."
Mr Smith enlisted the support of Business Link to help address the marketing, design and re branding needs of the business, including creating a professional brand identity to add to the company van, uniform, stationary and website.
Business link advisor Mark David was able to help secure funds towards the marketing, design and branding project in conjunction with North East England Investment Centre (NEEIC).
