Drainage solutions

Drain tiles

Does your garden resemble a swamp in the winter or after each rain shower. Or perhaps the location of your home means that your garden gets flooded or very damp after bad weather conditions?

Green Onion Landscaping offers a variety of drainage solutions for any landscape drainage issue. Standing water can damage your lawn and leave unsightly dead spots. If this is a problem in your lawn, drain tiles or a drainage network, gravel and many other solutions are possible for your lawn.

Green Onion Landscaping can install drain tiles in these areas to stop this problem. These tiles are essentially a shower drain for your lawn with a subsurface pipe system to carry the water away from the area and into a drainage zone. These systems can greatly improve the look of your lawn while virtually eliminating standing water caused by heavy rainfall.

Drainage network under lawn

Green Onion Landscaping can fit an effective drainage network under your lawn or garden in order to take away any surface water that lies after heavy rain.

Gardens in Northern England are often prone to poor drainage, especially in areas of 'new build' homes like those at Coulby Newham, Ingleby Barwick, Yarm, Middlesbrough, Stockton on Tees and Darlington, where the land has only recently been developed.
The soil in new build areas is often poor and predominantly clay.

Green Onion Landscaping can advise on several ways to improve a garden's drainage problems and we are very familiar with the new developments in the Teesside, Cleveland and Tees Valley area. You can rest assured that when you get your garden landscaped by us, we will be able to resolve any drainage issues which would otherwise ruin your beautiful garden landscape and we will make your landscaping project look fantastic, no matter what the weather or time of year.

We have many years of experience in rectifying badly designed gardens with poor drainage. Sometimes your house is built close to an easily flooded river or built on hard ground that either gets saturated or does not allow the drainage of excess water. We have the solution.

Call us today. Your drains can collapse for many reasons from leaking to exaggerated pressure from the ground. This can occur at any point down the pipeline, sometimes even under your beautifully blocked paved drive or your newly designed and laid patio, decking or turfed lawn area.

Re-shape the land

Making your garden's surface bank slightly so that any rain water flows somewhere else is a common solution. While this solution does work well, doing this correctly involves a lot of work. Any existing landscaping will effectively be wiped out as the garden is banked up on one side and lowered on the other; it's not going to turn your garden in to a mountain side, don't worry about that. All we do when we landscape your garden is to slightly modify the land's surface so that water can effectively drain using nothing more than the land itself.

The job of landscaping is to create an effective 'natural drain' which requires a lot of earth to be moved, so if you opt for this form of landscaping, be prepared to have mechanical diggers and a fair amount of mess in your garden for a week or two.

Improve the soil structure so it will drain more freely

If your soil is made up of clay you will always have drainage problems;even if the land is banked slightly water may still pool in places. The best solution to problem soil gardens is to modify the actual soil composition. Soil is made up of a mixture of organic matter (eg. compost, grit, sand) mixed with clay and loam. When your garden is landscaped it is the ideal time to modify the mix of your garden's soil composition. The landscaper will mix in a higher proportion of sand, loam or other natural ingredients to break up the soil in your garden. Over time this will encourage micro-organisms to penetrate deeper into the ground of your garden and will increase your garden soil's fertility.

Install drainage pits in low areas

Green Onion Landscaping prefer to use this method. To install a drainage pit, a large hole is excavated and filled with sand or rubble. Again this is ideally done when other landscaping work is being carried out. Our expert landscapers will advise as to where these pits will be best placed and at what stage of the landscaping process they should be installed. Once installed these pits will collect water which will then gradually seep away into the lower layers of the soil of your garden. Drainage pits are best dug long and deep, rather than square or circular so it is important that an expert landscape gardener carries this work out for you, otherwise you run the risk of creating mini swimming pools and making the drainage problem worse.

Install surface drains

This type of drainage is also known as a 'spoon drain'. To install these, a concreted depression is set along the bottom of a slope, or at the edge of a paved area; or a 'half pipe' is installed. When it rains, water runs into the 'spoon drain' and is carried to a collection point (usually an underground pipe or pit). Once again these are best / simplest to install when other landscaping work is being carried out.
