Why think of  laying a new turf lawn in the Summer months when you could have it a new lawn laid in the Winter months so that it is ready for the Summer.

Turfing in the winter or spring

  • If you lay turf in the Winter or spring months it requires less looking after - it doesn't dry out so much.

  • You are less likely to have the kids running over it every five minutes - Children are less likely to be on the turf in the winter months.

  • New turf won't stop you from using your lawn - you will be less likely to be sat out in the cooler weather.

  • Wetter weather means you don't have to do as much watering to the new turf.

Save yourself money - It is cheaper for us to supply you turf in the Winter months.

Laying turf from May onwards is still possible and you will still get a beautiful turfed lawn as a result, but in summer you will have to stay off the new turf for a few weeks, or until the turf has knitted and settled into the newly levelled ground. It makes practical and common sense to lay your new turf as far in advance of the summer as possible.

Rules for newly laid turf

  • You can use your new turf lawn as soon as it is knitted/rooted. This usually takes between 2- 3 weeks.

  • In Summer you must water your new turf lots to keep it moist and encourage it to knit.

  • You must only water new turf when the sun has gone down so that it doesn't get scorched.

Please do not neglect a newly turfed lawn, it will die as a result of this. New turf is actually quite difficult to kill, it would have to be seriously neglected to completely die off but that does not mean you can leave it to fend for itself.
If you want your lawn to look plush, green and healthy water it each evening.

Who needs a newly turfed lawn

English people are famous for their love of a good lawn, and this is just as true in Teesside as it is anywhere else in the U.K. No matter where in Teesside, Tees Valley or Cleveland you live, a beautiful lawn can make your house look more like a home and enhance your garden space with a bit of green.

It's especially important in the towns of Teesside,Tees Valley and North Yorkshire that we retain our greenery. Especially in Stockton on Tees, Darlington and Middlesbrough which have seen self contained 'new villages' such as Coulby Newham and Ingleby Barwick emerge, that we at least try to retain a little green in our lives. If nothing else a good lawn gives our children somewhere to play in the Summer and provides an area for the adults to relax on the occasional sunny day we have.

While it's true that Stockton, Middlesbrough and Darlington do have their 'green belts' it's always nice to have somewhere special; a place you can call your own and shut out the world while you relax. That's why every home needs it's own lawn, and turf is usually the best option.

Laying your lawn turf

When you chose to lay turf, you are essentially laying a pre-grown lawn. Turf is basically just purpose grown grass on a roll, so it weighs a lot and shifting it around and cutting it up is hard work so let us the professionals do this for you.

The advantages of a turf lawn over a seed lawn are:

  • An instant beautiful lawn with mature grass available for you to use almost immediately.

  • An excellent result without having to seed, weed, re-seed, water and keep the birds off your expensive grass seed.

Turfing is best left to professional landscapers like, Green Onion Landscaping. While it is entirely possible to get a good result by going the DIY route, we would recommend letting our team do the dirty and heavy labour that's involved in hefting the rolls about and preparing the ground for the turf to lay on.

Green Onion Landscaping are based in Stockton. We can recommend the best places locally to source your turf. A good lawn starts with good quality turf. If you buy poor quality turf you will never get a good end result. In Teesside there are many places to buy turf, but few places stock good quality turf at a good price.

We can make certain that you always get the best possible turf for the job at the best price, no matter if you are buying your turf in Stockton on Tees, Darlington or Middlesbrough, we will always get you a good deal on good quality turf that's right for your specific lawn's application.

Preparing ground for new lawn turf

Correct ground preparation is absolutely essential. We cannot stress this enough. If you want your turf to establish itself well and survive long term. The future of your turf depends on the ground being able to support it correctly. Inadequately prepared ground will never produce good results. The Stockton on Tees garden in the picture (above) has been rotovated, raked and leveled prior to the application of the turf. This is a great example of a beautifully turfed landscape project.

All existing turf should be removed before laying new turf, preferably by slicing beneath the old grass with a spade, for larger areas a purpose built, powered turf cutter is used. All heavy clay areas need to be broken up with a rotivator, and sharp sand dug in to prevent water logging when the turf is laid.

The positions of existing trees, shaded areas and availability of drainage need to be taken into account before you start to turf too. Green Onion Landscaping will always do this for you, installing drainage where it is needed, rotovating the earth where it is too heavy and making certain that your turf has the best chance to survive and look fantastic: there is nothing worse than a turf lawn which looks great for a week then dies because the ground beneath was not prepared correctly. Or a perfect turf lawn that is ruined when old weeds from a previous grassed area start poking through because they were not removed prior to laying your new turf.

Leveling the ground for lawn turf

The ground must be as flat and as smooth as possible when turf is laid. This is done manually and requires quite a bit of skill and a lot of hard work to get a good result. We are skilled experts and have had years of practice in gardens around Teesside, especially  in the Stockton, Middlesbrough and Darlington new build areas such as Ingleby Barwick. Our results are always excellent. Practice makes perfect!

Why must the ground be level?

Turf is very pliable, so it will follow any ground contours. If your turf lawn is not levelled, you will have terrible problems when you come to mow the lawn in the summer. You will end up cutting the grass unevenly. It will also look dreadful.

Preparation i.e rotovating and raking are hard work and best done by professionals who are experienced in using specialist heavy machinery and carrying out often heavy work that's involved. As we are based in Teesside we are able to provide all of our own equipment, ensuring that the turfing job is done correctly and with all the right tools.

Types of lawn turf

Choosing the lay of the turf and the type of turf is an important part of the process. There are several types of turf available. Green Onion Landscaping are always happy to provide you with all the information you need on which turf is best for your particular project.

You may need a hard wearing turf lawn for the children to play on. A turf lawn that will withstand having garden furniture on it and being heavily abused. You may want an ornamental turf lawn that you can cut in stripes (you will need a mower with a roller for this). You may want a compromise between the two types of turf lawn.

Whatever the situation you can be certain that Green Onion Landscaping will have come across the perfect solution at some time in the past, on one of the many other projects in Cleveland, tees Valley or Teesside. We have worked on many turfing projects. We are pleased to pass on our experience to you when we visit to assess your turfing job.

Lawn turf care tips

When and how often can I water my new turf - without adequate water your new turf lawn will die. Start watering the turf within 30 minutes of it being laid. This is very important. Never let the turf dry out in the first two to three weeks, preferably until the roots have established themselves and begun to 'knit' in the soil under the turf.

When you water your turf, make sure that the underside of the turf and the first 5cm of topsoil are damp; The best way to check is to lift the corner of several turf segments to check that the soil is damp underneath.

Water should be applied 'little and often', rather than flooding the turf so that it drowns or has big pools of water on it. Over watering turf encourages the development of turf diseases and excessive build up of moss and fungus. This will destroy your new turf.

Never water turf very late in the evening; this will cause the turf to stay wet overnight and once again it will be prone to disease and rot. Never water turf in the very hot direct sunlight, this will scorch your new turf. Even after the critical first few weeks are over you may have to check that the soil has not dried up. Green Onion's Landscapers will always advise you of how to look after your new turf lawn once it has been laid.

When can I mow my new turf

Green Onion Landscaping offer a lawn mowing and maintenance service. We recommend that you don't mow your new turf until it has knitted (rooted) to the ground. To check whether your new turf has knitted / rooted, lift up a corner of the new turf. If it has rooted you will see the new roots of the turf will have woven into the soil.

Ensure your lawn mower is set at it's highest setting, you do not want to scalp your new turf during the first mowing.

Mow the lawn often but ensure you only remove one third of the grass turf height. When the new turf is established you will be able to reduce the level on your mower and cut your turf lawn shorter.
