Fairfield Stockton Sandstone Patio and Garden Design Project

This garden landscaping project in Fairfield, Stockton-on-Tees involved the construction of a circular sandstone patio, walnut composite decking, climbing rose archway, curved planting beds, decorative cobbled edging, a Staffordshire blue brick retaining wall and a shaped lawn.

The clients wanted a more personal and interesting outdoor space with somewhere to sit, dine and enjoy the garden during warmer weather.

Sandstone Patio, Walnut Composite Decking and a Rose Archway

We installed a circular sandstone patio to create a usable seating and dining area within the garden. The patio was positioned so it could be reached through a timber garden archway.

The clients asked for a climbing red rose to grow over the timber archway to create a colourful, romantic focal point and soften the transition between the patio and lawn.

Natural sandstone was chosen for its warm tones and varied appearance. The paving included shades of cream, peach, pink and soft brown, helping the patio sit comfortably alongside the planting areas and surrounding garden features.

The walnut composite decking provides an additional seating area and complements the warm tones of the sandstone paving. Integrated decking lights were installed within the steps to provide subtle evening illumination and help define the different levels within the garden.

Curved Planting Beds, Retaining Wall and Cobbled Edging

The clients asked for a garden design with curved shapes rather than straight lines. Curved planting beds were created throughout the garden, helping to form a distinctive heart-shaped lawn and giving the space a more personal and bespoke appearance.

Dark grey cobbled edging was used around the patio and lawn to define the curves and help tie the different areas of the garden together. The cobbles added contrast against the sandstone paving and helped create a softer, more traditional finish.

A retaining wall built using Staffordshire blue engineering bricks was installed to support the raised lawn area. The wall provides structure within the garden while complementing the cobbled edging, sandstone patio and walnut composite decking.

Shaped Lawn and Planting Areas

We installed a shaped turf lawn to continue the curved design through the centre of the garden. The lawn and surrounding borders were designed to create a gentle heart-shaped feature when viewed from the patio and decking areas.

The planting beds were carefully shaped to follow the curves of the lawn and patio, helping create a flowing garden design with year-round interest and colour.

The finished garden combined hard landscaping and soft landscaping, with the circular sandstone patio, walnut composite decking, integrated decking lights, cobbled edging, Staffordshire blue brick retaining wall, turfing, planting and rose archway all working together as one complete garden design.
