Sandstone Patio Retreat and Garden Landscaping in Marton, Middlesbrough
This garden landscaping project in Marton, Middlesbrough transformed a sloping and underused garden into an attractive outdoor space designed for relaxation, entertaining and family enjoyment.
The project included the installation of an Indian sandstone patio, curved garden steps, sandstone pathways, a circular patio, a retaining wall, decorative gravel and lawn improvements. The finished garden now provides several practical areas where the homeowner can sit, relax and enjoy the garden throughout the year.
Indian Sandstone Patio and Secluded Seating Area
One of the main features of this landscaping project was the creation of a private sandstone patio retreat at the top of the garden.
The homeowner wanted a peaceful area where he could sit with a coffee, read and enjoy the garden away from the main family seating areas. To achieve this, Green Onion Landscaping designed and built a raised patio using warm-toned Indian sandstone paving.
The natural colours running through the sandstone created a striking feature and worked well with the brickwork of the property.
Indian sandstone remains a popular paving choice for garden patios because it offers natural variation, character and a traditional finish. You can learn more about our patio and paving installation services across Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Teesside.
Sandstone Steps and Garden Pathways
To connect the different areas of the garden, we constructed sandstone steps leading from the upper patio down into the main garden.
The steps were finished with complementary brick detailing to create a softer transition between the paving and the surrounding landscape.
We also installed a sandstone pathway running alongside the property, linking the secluded patio area with a second circular patio near the French doors. This created a practical route through the garden while improving access and adding visual interest and an alternative area to sit while dining alfresco.

Circular Patio, Gravel and Retaining Wall Construction
A circular patio was created close to the house to provide an additional seating and dining area for family use during the warmer months.
Decorative gravel was installed alongside the pathways and patio areas to complement the sandstone paving and help with drainage around the property.
Due to the slope within the garden, a retaining wall was also constructed. The retaining wall helped support the raised lawn area and made the garden more usable.
The combination of Indian sandstone paving, curved brick detailing and carefully designed levels helped create a more natural flow throughout the garden. By introducing several distinct seating and viewing areas, the garden became far more functional while still feeling spacious and open.
