French Drainage Systems Explained

One of the most popular methods is the French drainage system. These involve trenches filled with gravel that contain a perforated pipe, which redirects surface water away from the problem area to a main drain, septic tank or drain field.

Because the system sits underground, nothing unsightly is left on view. First, we lay a layer of 10mm gravel, then we lay the perforated drainage pipe to capture excess water. Next, we surround the pipe with gravel, which prevents overflow, protects the drainage system and filters out sediment and debris to stop clogs. Lastly a layer of breathable membrane is applied over the top of the gravel. Soil is added last and then your turf. Thanks to this design, a French drain can work trouble-free for up to ten years; however, we recommend a seasonal inspection to keep it in top condition and safeguard your walls and sub-surface structures from groundwater pressure.
