This sandstone patio installation in Wynyard, near Stockton-on-Tees, transformed an ordinary paved garden into a warm and inviting outdoor living space. Using natural Indian sandstone paving, Green Onion Landscaping created a patio designed to complement the property while providing an attractive and practical area for outdoor living.
The original patio consisted of old grey paving slabs which lacked colour and character. During the landscaping consultation, the homeowners decided they wanted a more natural and timeless patio design that would complement both the garden and the property.
Desert Sandstone Patio with Natural Colour Variation
Green Onion Landscaping recommended desert sandstone paving for this project. This is a natural material with beautiful colour variation, making every patio unique.
The paving used in this garden included soft tones of warm gold, grey and muted mauve, helping to create a much softer and more welcoming appearance than the original concrete paving.
Natural sandstone also looks beautiful throughout the seasons, with the colours becoming even richer after rainfall.
Sandstone Patio Installation Process
We carefully removed the original paving before excavating and preparing the ground properly for the new patio installation. A solid sub-base was installed and compacted thoroughly to create a stable foundation for the sandstone paving.
The sandstone flags were laid on a wet mortar bed in a random laying pattern. This gives the patio a more natural appearance and avoids the repetitive look often seen with standard paving layouts.
To frame the patio area, contrasting Tegula block paving cobbles were installed around the edges. The darker edging stones help define the shape of the patio while adding texture and contrast to the finished design.
Pathways and Decorative Gravel
As part of the wider landscaping project, stepping stones were installed around the conservatory using matching sandstone and Tegula edging details.
The surrounding areas were finished with decorative Monmouth Green gravel, which complements the warm paving tones while helping soften the overall appearance of the garden.
The completed landscaping project created a far more attractive, practical and welcoming outdoor space for the homeowners to enjoy throughout the year.
